Confessions of a Non-Reader

-
Alright, so I'm more than a non-reader. I hate it. Actually, I more than hate it. I despise it. Does "despise" indicate more than "hate"? It sounds like it does. Maybe if I read more, I'd be better able to tease out the nuances. But I digress... I'm sure the folks at the coffee place where I 'office' think I love to read. Hell, I do it all the time. When I'm not writing, I mean. Or flitting around the Internet. And there I go again... Digression at it's best. I'm stalling. I need to confess and I'm apparently not quite ready. Bless me Father for I have sinned... Isn't that how it goes? I did a bit of research on the Catholic Church when I was writing my novel, but I never delved into the confessional. I figured I'd seen enough movies to guess that part. Ok, ok. Here we go. I'm ashamed to admit this and I'm asking for absolution. I started reading post-graduate school for research purposes only. And I do mea...

Be That Person

-
A friend texted me last night. Her almost twelve year old son is starting middle school today and she was more than a little stressed. I guess it's somewhat normal for parents to be nervous about such milestones in their children's lives. I mean sixth grade means a bigger school, perhaps switching classrooms, more complex homework assignments, etc, etc. I'm sure there's also some wistfulness about the whole thing. The "My baby's growing up" kinda thing. My friend's concerns last night (and again this morning) were far larger. You see, her son is different. He always has been. Not only is he on "the spectrum," he also has Tourettte's. And he's on the fringes of non-binary. Plus, he lives on the border of Texas and Arkansas in a place that is far from open-minded and falls just below marginally accepting. This is the land of conservative politics (ie Trump), gun rights, big religion, and the concomitant "family values" that i...

Today is a Lucky Day

-
My dad turns ninety-three today. Yes, really. He was an "old dad" when I was born - he was forty-one - and well ahead of his time. Dads having kids in their forties is much more common today that it was in mine. Many thought he was my grandfather until they got to know us. Dad and I reveled in our age difference - about the time I was considered an "adult" at the movie theater, he was a "senior;" I don't think we ever paid two full price admissions to a movie. And we went to a lot of movies together. We can't go see a movie for his birthday, nor can I even hang out and watch one with him (though I am giving him a new blu-ray for his vast collection - "Captain America," his first Avengers movie). Covid stole all that.  I moved to this god-forsaken desert to spend time with my dad. I've only seen him a handful of times since March. Don't get me wrong. I couldn't be happier about how his assisted living facility has handled the p...
